The light sculpture is the secondary element and sits parallel to the primary one creating a disembodied yet analogous whole. The ambient light draws attention to the ethereal and unpredictable movements of the fish, creating an experience that is distinguished from its physical originator.

All pictural, emotional and technical aspects of the original painting require the viewer to engage with it. The protagonist of the painting is obviously the starry sky, so this is naturally where we’ve decided to put our emphasis on. Most of the interaction consists of triggering a flow of swirling brush strokes mimicking the tormented movements of the wind, and a set of artificial lights standing for the stars sprinkled in Van Gogh’s canvas. Our interpretation also plays with the sense of depth given by the different scales and mirrored curls in the landscape, since the position of the viewer in the space determines whether the stars are ‘shining’ or not.

This research of proximity was inspired by the post impressionist use of expressive, distorted brush strokes, that require the eye of the onlooker himself to mix the pure and vibrant colours to create his own perception of the painting. The mystical value of the scene depicted also seemed of great interest to us, as it is an evocation of universal human concerns that any viewer can relate to, a cosmic reflection about life and death in a way. Here’s what Van Gogh said about his painting : “Looking at the stars always makes me dream. Why, i ask myself, shouldn’t the shining dots of the sky be as accessible as the black dots on the map of France? Just as we take the train to get to Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star.”

We chose a semi-abstract, symbolic visual treatment for this installation, leaving some elements to the interpretation of the audience, hoping to create for the viewer a need to identify with the piece, and approach the installation to engage with it, physically and emotionally.

The television set is often considered a banal piece of furniture. However, disregarding it as such ignores the intrinsic beauties of this technology. Following our mandate to explore the everyday and reveal unseen fantastical dimensions, “investigation #1 – television” aims to call attention to this machine that we look at daily, but which we never really regard by itself.

This inquiry began by using techniques such as high-speed photography and macro-optics to analyse and observe the moment at which a television is switched off. Observing the technological process during this event uncovered fascinating activity and compelling visuals. By highlighting these visuals and presenting them out of context, the imagery is re-contextualized while simultaneously revealing the beauty and poetry that they hold in their own right.

This concept is further paralleled in our presentation. Just as the content offers images in a context we do not discern, so is the structure of the installation meant to display the television itself in a way we do not observe or consider. By revealing the inner workings of this machine and pushing this investigation further, the hope is to uncover even more hidden layers produced by this commonplace device.
